Talons of the Eagle

Great film

Billy Blanks and Jalal Merhi go undercover in a martial arts tournament to take down James Hong's drug operation, and it is exactly as good as that sounds. VSA's 4K scan from the original camera negative makes this 1992 Canuxploitation gem look better than it ever has, and the Merhi commentary is a genuine treat. This is the video store era at its most gloriously unpretentious.

Talons of the Eagle is another one of those early 90s martial arts movies that I find incredibly easy to enjoy. Billy Blanks and Jalal Merhi might not be the greatest actors in the world, but that hardly matters once the fighting starts, and having James Hong along for the ride only makes things better. It is cheesy, predictable, and feels like something I would have happily picked up from the video store based entirely on the cover. There is a real charm to this particular era of low-budget action filmmaking, and Talons of the Eagle gave me pretty much exactly what I wanted from it. Nothing groundbreaking, just a very enjoyable bit of martial arts nonsense.

I liked this more than Expect No Mercy, but that's not saying much

Talons of the Eagle is a thoroughly entertaining slice of early 90s martial arts action, with Billy Blanks and Jalal Merhi going undercover to take down a criminal organization led by James Hong. The story is straightforward, but that's really just an excuse to string together training scenes, fights, and plenty of action-movie attitude.

The movie looks better than I expected in this presentation. The restoration preserves the gritty character of the original photography while offering a cleaner, more detailed image that makes this feel like a substantial improvement over the way many of these low-budget action movies were seen on home video.

The songs and music are pure early 90s and add considerably to the charm. Combined with the fashions, training sequences, and martial arts choreography, the soundtrack makes the whole thing feel like a time capsule from the video-store era.

Overall, Talons of the Eagle isn't trying to reinvent martial arts cinema, but it's a fun, nostalgic action movie that looks better than ever in this release.
