The Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive

Physical film preservation has been part of Vinegar Syndrome since before we released our first disc.

In the early days, that often meant finding film that had been sitting untouched for decades, getting it out of places where it was actively deteriorating, and bringing it somewhere it could be properly cared for.

We’re still doing the same thing today.

There’s just a lot more film.

Reels and Counting

The Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive currently cares for approximately 100,000 individual reels of motion picture film, making it one of the largest independently operated film collections of its kind in the United States.

Some of those reels belong to films we own. Others have been entrusted to us for long-term preservation. Others may be the only surviving elements for films that have almost completely disappeared.

And the collection keeps growing.

Film regularly arrives after decades spent in basements, warehouses, storage units, laboratories, production offices, and plenty of other places that were never meant to function as archives.

Sometimes it arrives in excellent condition.

Sometimes it very much does not.

Either way, the first priority is the same: get the film somewhere safe.

Vinegar Syndrome

New headquarters

A New Home in Meriden, Connecticut

When Vinegar Syndrome moved into our new headquarters in Meriden, Connecticut in 2025, building a better long-term home for the Film Archive was a major part of the project.

Our new film vaults are built partially into a hillside, which gives us a naturally cooler and more stable environment before the climate-control systems even get involved.

From there, dedicated industrial cooling systems allow us to keep the vaults cool and dry year-round, dramatically slowing the natural deterioration of acetate film.

That’s really what film preservation comes down to.

You can’t stop chemical decay altogether. But with the right storage conditions, you can slow it down significantly and give the film a much longer life.

For us, that means taking care of the film whether we have plans to release it next month, next year, or not at all.

Vinegar Syndrome

Reel Storage

Something About Those Blue Cans

One of the less exciting parts of preservation is also one of the most important: the container the film is sitting in.

Throughout the archive, we have undertaken the very large job of rehousing our elements into archival-grade, non-reactive, vented polypropylene film cans manufactured by Tuscan.

Older metal cans can rust, react with their contents, and trap the acidic gases released as acetate film deteriorates. Vented polypropylene cans allow those byproducts to escape instead of keeping them sealed around the film.

It sounds like a small thing.

Across tens of thousands of reels, it isn’t.

Preserve

Preservation Happens Before the Scanner

It’s easy to think of preservation as scanning, especially when the end result is a new restoration on UHD or Blu-ray — But the physical film comes first.

Our Film Archive team inspects incoming elements, evaluates their condition, cleans and repairs film when needed, replaces poor or failing storage materials, and prepares elements so they can eventually be handled and scanned safely — Sometimes a reel needs very little.

Sometimes decades of bad storage have left us with brittle film, failing splices, damaged perforations, dirt, deterioration, or other problems that need to be dealt with before scanning can even be considered.

And sometimes the best thing we can do is put the film in the right environment and leave it alone until the time comes to work with it. Not every reel in the archive is attached to an upcoming release.

That isn’t the point.

The film is worth preserving whether we have immediate plans for it or not.

Vinegar Syndrome

Survival

Sometimes It’s the Only One

Independent film preservation can get a little scary once you realize how few materials may actually survive.

A major studio production might have multiple protection elements stored in professional facilities. Independent films often didn’t have that luxury.

Negatives, prints, sound elements, and production materials could end up scattered among producers, labs, distributors, filmmakers, collectors, and storage facilities. Companies went out of business. Labs closed. Records disappeared. Film was discarded.

As a result, some of the materials that arrive at Vinegar Syndrome are not simply the best surviving elements we know of.

They may be the only ones.

That makes even a fairly ordinary-looking reel worth taking seriously.

Protection

Slowing Down the Clock

Our name comes from a form of film deterioration, so it makes sense that a lot of what we do is really about slowing deterioration down.

Sometimes that results in a new 4K restoration and a disc on your shelf.

Sometimes it means repairing a damaged reel.

Sometimes it means identifying and protecting film that nobody has looked at in decades.

And sometimes it simply means putting the film in a better can, moving it into a cold vault, and giving it more time.

That may not be the most visible part of what we do.

But it’s one of the most important.
