Distribution & Fulfillment
The Catch and the Release
Every disc on your shelf has a story that starts long before you open the package. Before a film can be scanned, restored, and assembled as brand-new release, it has to be tracked down, licensed, and brought into the mix.
Then after that entire process, it has to find its way back out into the world, whether that's on the big screen, on streaming services, through our retail partners, or straight to your door.
In this section, we're pulling back the curtain on that journey: how we find films we love, how they reach audiences across the world, and how our warehouse crew gets every order from the picking racks and into your collection!
Where do the films come from?
Acquiring films—meaning the rights, either as an agreed upon term or outright purchase in perpetuity—is tantamount to any boutique label or film distributor.
Vinegar Syndrome works with a variety of rights holders: major Hollywood studios, stalwarts of the American independent film scene, internationally renowned purveyors of cinema from around the world and, in some cases, the filmmakers themselves.
How do the films get released?
Film distribution takes on many forms: theatrical runs of new releases or restorations, event screenings at your local art-house, digital streams across various types of on demand platforms and, most important to our mission, physical home video.
We also have a sister company, OCN Distribution, which handles physical media distribution for nearly fifty different boutique home video labels and counting. On the VS site, these are referred to as Partner Labels but they’re all independently operated companies that are responsible for acquiring films on their own. OCN assists with the production and/or distribution of their discs both in a direct-to-consumer fashion via the VS website and in regards to wholesale to other retail partners, including our friends at Orbit and Diabolik as well as dozens of other indie e-tailers. OCN has also established a recent relationship with Barnes & Noble, which will bring our growing catalog of discs to many more customers both in person and online. OCN is also responsible for distributing the entire Vinegar Syndrome and Melusine catalogs, so when you see the OCN logo at a pop-up event or a sale online, your favorite VS and VS sub-label releases might just be included too!
From the Vault to Your Shelf
It may not be as glamorous as the work done in the film lab, or as thrilling as the chase for the films themselves, but one of the most important steps in the whole process often goes unnoticed: getting our films into your hands.
We take pride in every part of our fulfillment operation, from overseeing manufacturing and the occasional in-house assembly to packing and shipping orders by the thousands, straight to your door.
Humble Beginnings
Our warehouse operations began at our building in Bridgeport, Connecticut in a closet tucked away in the corner of our film vault — yes, you read that right: a closet. It was from there we would pick and pack the occasional order or two that would trickle in and walk to the post office, which happened to be right across the street, to get a label for shipping. Our customers’ packages were quite literally in our hands every step of the way.
Growing Pains
With the rising popularity of Vinegar Syndrome and the increasing number of loyal fans, we had to adapt quickly.
The warehouse in Bridgeport became an ever-changing space — walls being torn down, rooms and floors being used for additional space, and layout shifting constantly. All to keep up with the company’s growth. We even opened a fulfillment center in Denver, Colorado, and a small shipping outlet in Toronto, Canada, to help handle the volume of orders and get them to customers faster.
As we kept growing, so did our need for a building that could keep up. In 2023, we found our new headquarters: a 120,000-square-foot former data center in Meriden, Connecticut. We made the decision to consolidate all of our warehouse operations under one roof, and after years of hard work transforming the space, we officially moved in in Spring 2025.
From Server Racks to Pallet Racks
Today, our warehouse spans 70,000 square feet and is equipped with 15 state-of-the-art packing stations, over 40 picking carts, and designated areas for receiving, inventory control and backstock. Throughout the space you’ll find 48 pallet picking locations dedicated to each month’s new releases, more than 700 pallet locations housing our extensive backstock inventory, and nearly 7,000 picking bins, currently home to 4,000 active SKUs on the site (and growing!).
A day in the life in the warehouse is dynamic, energetic and constantly evolving. On a regular day, there may be only 100 packages to ship out, leaving us time to focus on organization and inventory control. Following a sale or event, we may be working through a queue of tens of thousands of packages, shipping all day long until every last one is out the door.
The warehouse has changed a lot since that closet in Bridgeport, but one thing hasn't: every order still passes through our hands on its way to yours.
