We Are What We Are

Plot: A Mexican cannibal family struggles to maintain their dark rituals after the patriarch suddenly dies.

Love these artsy cover arts, really cool.

Maybe this horror flick is a more grounded version of "The Hills Have Eyes" or something with the cannibalistic family and whatnot. Way more bleak than I thought it would be which I give props to. I really enjoyed it in a weird way but it definitely is a downer.

This horror film is definitely not the gore-fest a couple of the trailers I watched made it out to be. There is not much killing, but the overall tone is dark, and it's made quite well.

The story, about a family, begins where the patriarch suddenly dies, leaving the rest to fend for themselves. It is dark and gets very violent with a little decent gore. but it's about the power struggle the family is going through while acclimating to their new lives.

The direction, acting, cinematography are all done well, but I particularly liked the outstanding score.

I have not seen the film with the audio commentary yet, but there's a sweet making of featurette and a cool booklet. Also, I'm stoked to have been able to pick up one of the badass slipcovers!

I haven't seen the remake, nor can I compare this versions restoration, but the film looks and sounds excellent.

We Are What We Are is a Mexican horror drama with a connection to Guillermo del Toro's Cronos and was remade in 2013. This release features an audio commentary and an archival making of featurette and is an essential film for anyone interested in contemporary Mexican horror films.
