The Ripper is exactly the kind of SOV horror oddity I want Degausser digging up. A college professor gets hold of a ring supposedly connected to Jack the Ripper, starts having violent visions, and before long things get very ****** and very weird. It’s cheap, grimy, and absolutely committed to the bit.
Tom Savini showing up as the Ripper is the big hook for me, but the movie has plenty of personality beyond that — nasty kills, goofy moments, weird dance scenes, and that unmistakable mid-’80s shot-on-video texture. It feels like something you would have randomly found on a rental-store shelf and taken home purely because the cover looked insane.
The Blu-ray presentation is also exactly what I want for something like this. Degausser restored it from the best surviving archival tape master instead of trying to make it look like film, so it keeps the original video character intact. The commentaries, Savini interview, cast/producer interviews, trailer, and promo material make this feel like a proper preservation job instead of just dumping an old master onto a disc.
Rough? Definitely. Sleazy? Oh yeah. But this kind of forgotten horror getting a loaded Blu-ray release is why I collect this stuff in the first place. 😁
