A great piece of Hong Kong fantasy filmmaking.

The Iceman Cometh is exactly the kind of Hong Kong genre mashup I love. You’ve got Ming Dynasty warriors frozen in time, waking up 300 years later in modern Hong Kong, and then the movie just starts throwing martial arts, fantasy, horror, comedy, sword fights, gunplay, and ridiculous stunt work at you. Somehow it all works.
Yuen Biao is great, Yuen Wah makes for a nasty villain, and Maggie Cheung brings a lot of charm to the fish-out-of-water stuff. The final showdown is completely over the top, and some of the stunt work — including that construction-crane sequence — is the kind of thing that reminds me why ’80s Hong Kong action was on another level.
I also really like how loaded this release is. You get the 115-minute Hong Kong cut, the longer 122-minute Mandarin export cut, multiple audio options, interviews with Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah, commentary, trailers, and a booklet. The Robert Sammelin slipcover looks killer too.
Weird, funny, violent, and full of insane stunt work. Easy 5/5 for me. 😁

I already had the 88 Films release of The Iceman Cometh, so the VS edition inevitably became a comparison between the two. 88 did a very nice job with theirs, but for me the VS release is the one to own. It feels like the more substantial package and ultimately made double-dipping worthwhile. As for the film, I love the sheer mixture of martial arts, fantasy, comedy, and time-travel madness. Yuen Biao is always a pleasure to watch, and the film has that wonderful anything-goes energy that makes Hong Kong cinema from this period so much fun. The 88 Films edition is certainly no slouch, but if I were keeping only one, it would be the VS.

This was a blind buy I don't regret . I had a good time with this one. Great transfer as usual
- BG16mm MemberBrian G.Verified Buyer1 month agoRated 5 out of 5 starsExciting and absurd movie with Yuen Bison and Maggie Cheung
The Iceman Cometh is a hard-hitting but fun blend of action and fantasy, with stellar work done by Yuen Biao, the underrated member of the three dragons. Fantasy meets modern life with relentless martial arts makes this a must-own for fans of the genre. I wish I had gotten the slipcover, but the packaging still stuns!
