Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

Shohei Sugiyama (Koji Yakusho) seems to have it all - a high-paying job as an accountant, a beautiful home, a caring wife and a doting daughter he loves dearly. However, he feels something is missing in his life. One day while commuting on the train he spots a beautiful woman staring wistfully out a window and eventually decides to find her. His search leads him head-first into the world of competitive ballroom dancing.

An “infinitely touching" (Washington Post) modern classic from director Masayuki Suo, SHALL WE DANCE? is a feel-good romantic comedy that "will sweep you off your feet" (Austin Chronicle). Reviews

Yes we shall

"Of an ilk with Suo's other films available via FMC, but elevated by Koji Yakusho and just an overall pleasant and entertaining movie."

Tyler M. (5/5)

More Suo!

"Great to see more Masayuki Suo released. More to come, hopefully!"

MR H. (5/5)

Fantastic

"I was literally blown away how great this movie is. Koji Yakusho delivering a great performance - midlife crisis vibes & quirky characters. Highly recommend it. Great release"

Marcel W. (5/5)

Beautiful Film

"Such a whimsical and endearing film. Koji never fails to portray a man with such etiquette and sincerity. Looks incredible as well. A must have for Koji Yakusho fans and anybody that wants to laugh, cry, and be rejuvenated by passion or going on a whim."

Aaron S. (5/5)

Heartwarming and Life-Affirming Film

"This was a heartwarming film which was touching and at times funny as well. Going into it, I expected to see a rom-com, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was something different. Instead, it was the story of a man who had become stuck in a rut and becomes displeased with his mundane life. He accidentally discovers a love for dance and it opens up a whole new world for him. The film shows us that we should always be open to jew experiences and to look at life as full of wonderful possibilities."

Christopher K. (5/5)

Lovely romantic film

"The 4k remaster of this film is fantastic and pops on the screen like never before. My only experience with the story was the Jennifer Lopez remake but because I enjoyed that film I needed to watch the original and am it does not disappoint. It steals your heart and then some. Highly recommended for romance fans."

Michael P. (5/5)

Shall we buy this Blu-ray? YES!

"I've waited literally years for this movie to be upgraded to high definition. It was stuck on a DVD from Miramax for what seems forever. Then, out of nowhere this high def Edition appears with little fan fare for this classic indie. I'm not complaining, I'm grateful. It's not a 4k disc, but it is a 4k transfer. Even though it's just a standard Blu-ray it looks incredibly detailed and vibrant. The best the movie has ever looked. And it's the uncut version of the movie, unlike the American theatrical version on DVD. If you love the movie, this is a must buy."

Alberto S. (5/5)

Wonderful release

"One of the best films of the 90’s. Poignant, subtle and a great reflection on how people in Japan struggle to find their own ways of expression. Miles better than that dull teller. This is the film you want to watch. Stellar transfer and ofc the full uncut version as it was meant to be seen. No badly edited Miramax version here! A must own for film lovers"

Maximillian G. (5/5)

Great film

"A lovely, feel good movie. Terrific restoration, looks fantastic. One of my favorite recent discoveries."

Michael P. (5/5)

Lovely film

"Very underrated modern Japanese film with great moments and the impeccable Koji Yakusho"
