Red Mob feels like somebody took a late-’80s action movie and dropped it straight into the chaos of post-Soviet Russia. The setup with an Afghan war veteran being forced into a gun-and-drug smuggling run is pretty straightforward, but once the action kicks in, this thing starts blowing up everything it can get its hands on.
The helicopter sequences are the big highlight for me. There’s some genuinely wild stunt work here, tons of gunfire, huge explosions, and that slightly dangerous feeling you get from older action movies where you’re not completely convinced everything went according to plan 😂. It’s rough around the edges and a little long, but the practical action gives it a ton of personality.
The Blu-ray presentation is also a big reason I’m glad I own it. Vinegar Syndrome restored it in 2K from a 35mm interpositive and included both the Russian version and the slightly longer American cut, plus producer material and other extras. That’s exactly the kind of treatment an obscure movie like this deserves.
Not the tightest action movie ever made, but when it starts throwing helicopters and explosions at the screen, I’m having a good time. 😁
