Set during the Taiwanese martial law of the 1960s, this shockingly gruesome and terrifying coming-of-age drama based on a hugely popular video game sees two classmates who go looking for their missing friends and teachers, all of whom took part in an illegal book club, only to come face to face with ghosts and deformed monsters that have taken over their school. This masterful debut from director and co-writer John Hsu recalls the best of Guillermo del Toro, with enough blood, striking sound design, art direction and special effects to evoke Silent Hill and other landmarks of the genre.

A glimpse of the future in the past

"Genuinely creepy atmosphere, striking sound design and decently realized creature designs make this haunting tale of betrayal set in 1960s Taiwan really stick with you. I don't know anything about the game its based on, so I can't speak to that, but its a good movie based on a game, which is rare. There was some stuff that fell a little flat (I said decently realized creatures because some of the CG is subpar, but assuming they were working with a small budget, still well done), but overall I felt creeped out, which is the goal. I think the drama works better than the horror, but of it was only drama, it wouldn't have been as effective in my opinion. The most effective part of this whole thing is the part based in reality though because the historical drama portion of this film feels like it isn't too far away from happening again, right here in the US."

Haunting, Tense, and Highly Recommended

"This was a blind buy based on positive online reviews, and it absolutely delivered. Beautifully directed and deeply involving, the film builds real tension while grounding its horror in the very real trauma of Taiwan’s martial law era, giving it a strong Silent Hill–like atmosphere. An easy recommendation."

"Detention is stylish, atmospheric, and creepy."

Ghost Story

"A fun Taiwanese horror film with a decent story and cinematography"

Jon Y. (4/5)

Creepy Visuals, Fascinating Setting/History

"Really recommended for Silent Hill fans. This film being set in the early 1960s during Taiwan's period of martial law is interesting enough by itself - having a Silent Hill setting of monstrous grief, anger, and guilt? Sign. Me. Up. Some effects are clearly CG, but they're honestly fine, limited, and supplemented by real practical effects."

Derek P. (5/5)

Haunting and politically charged

"A beautifully shot and emotionally devastating horror film rooted in Taiwan’s White Terror era. Detention blends supernatural elements with real historical trauma, creating a chilling atmosphere that lingers long after the credits. The visuals are stunning, the themes resonant, and the narrative gripping. A rare mix of ghost story and political allegory that’s both terrifying and deeply moving."

Thomas L. (4/5)

Detention

"This is an excellent film and a bit of a Taiwanese history lesson. It's beautifully shot and, once things get moving, is deeply atmospheric and unnerving. I feel like the film might owe something to old Japanese games such as Fatal Frame in that respect. If you are a fan of such things, I say watch it!"

Ed G. (5/5)

A unique horror movie

"This is a cool horror movie. It's story is a little similar to things you've probably seen. But setting it amongst the backdrop of Taiwanese martial law makes it really unique."

Robert S. (4/5)

A beautiful adaptation of a video game I love.

"And people say that films based on video games are all bad. This film works for me say much. Love the artwork that they designed. Love how this film is shot. There’s some great scares in this. But I’m happy to have finally own this film on blu-ray."
