"The Shaw Brothers brand is evocative of many different things for different cinephiles both in the east and the west, but I think it would be safe to say that the Shaw name doesn’t immediately generate visions of necrophilia, writhing maggots and low key giallo conventions. Corpse Mania, a gorgeously rendered period piece cum serial killer thriller, defies many of the expected Shaw tropes for something decidedly odious; a gleefully sordid genre amalgam that’s as concerned with establishing a time and place as it is with making the viewer lose their lunch. And it succeeds."
