If you know who Nobuhiko Ōbayashi is, it's likely because you've seen Hausu (House), the phantasmagorical fantasy horror flick. In a complete deviation from that iconic film, he also made Beijing Watermelon, a drama about a greengrocer that has a heartwarming relationship with a poor Chinese collage student. It's an excellent film but the disc is a little bare bones with an interview, a trailer and a booklet featuring the writing of Aaron Gerow.

This release has an amazing transfer of this cult flick, with a lot of extras filled with information.

Great to get any and all Obayashi on Blu Ray, a favorite director and one of the worlds most interesting filmmakers, he made so much in so many differing genres. This one is delicate slice of culture clash.

Amazingly heartwarming and affecting. The final act is especially powerful. I wish there was maybe a bit more here in terms of extras (like a commentary), but the movie is an all-time masterpiece and the restoration looks lovely, so I can't complain too much.
