A Spaghetti Western/Kurosawa Film In 18th Century Scotland
"Saw this at the cinema on release, so was extremely happy to be able to get a copy via Vinegar Syndrome’s partner releases. An absolutely beautiful film with a really unique setup. It plays like a Kurosawa samurai vengeance piece, so consequently also has spaghetti western vibes (especially due to its setting and non-Japanese cast) - whilst being an authentic period piece set in 1790s Scotland. The always excellent Tim Roth being the thoroughly evil and unlikeable as Sugarman, the leader of a gang of murderers and cutthroats, one of the archetypes he seems to excel at. The equally excellent Jack Lowdon as his younger brother who suffers from having a vestigial conscience and the excellent Mitsuki Kimura (aka Kōki) as the titular Tornado. Excellent presentation on the media, cover art, slipcase etc as is to be expected for VS/OCN - this time on the IFC partner label."
