Not exactly steamy by modern standards, but Danielle Darrieux gives this first adaptation real elegance and emotional weight. The class tensions remain sharper than the forbidden romance, and the restrained approach has aged surprisingly well. The clean 2K presentation is lovely, although a few more extras would have been welcome.

The first adaptation of the D. H. Lawrence novel is from a time you wouldn't expect to see it. It is rather faithful, and simply cuts around the most risqué parts. A lack of bonus features is disappointing in this release.
