Vinegar Syndrome Ultra is delighted to present the 4K UHD debut of Simon Wincer’s cyborg action spectacular, D.A.R.Y.L. (1985), newly and exclusively restored for this release by Vinegar Syndrome.
When Joyce and Andy Richardson are offered the chance to foster a young boy, seemingly abandoned on the side of a secluded road, they take him in, treating him as the son they never had. Although he remembers his name is Daryl, everything else about his past, his parents, and how he ended up on that secluded road remains a mystery; Daryl cannot remember a thing! On the other hand, he quickly demonstrates incredible intelligence and the uncanny ability to learn any skill shown to him on the very first try. However, when a mysterious and sinister seeming couple arrive at the Richardson's home, claiming to be Daryl’s real parents, they and their adopted son are thrust into an incredible, high stakes cover up and fight for survival as Daryl’s actual identity is revealed, and his life put into immediate jeopardy.
Arriving at the height of adult-friendly family films, which offset their kid-friendly marketing with complex and at times violent stunts along with a pervasive sense of menace and danger, director Simon Wincer's (Quigley Down Under) D.A.R.Y.L. features an all-star supporting cast including Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap, Coneheads), Colleen Camp (Clue, Death Game) and Josef Sommer (Dirty Harry, Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Vinegar Syndrome Ultra proudly presents the 4K UHD debut of this action and suspense packed 80s video store favorite, complete with a brand new extended making-of documentary!

Great disc, maybe wait for standard edition
"Had a really good time with this movie, which I surprisingly had not seen or even heard of (that I can remember) as a child. And the disc looked and sounded great to me, plus it has a lengthy making-of doc and director commentary. While I do think the design of the VSU case, slipcover, case cover and reverse, and booklet here are pretty nice looking, they lack a strong gimmick like the Cloak and Dagger release. But the worst part is the lackluster booklet essays, one mostly a surface-level summary and another a very lame and basic nostalgia-bait piece of bs. If you're on the fence due to the price of the Limited Edition, seek out the standard elsewhere or wait until a sell-out of the Limited here."

Really liked the film as a kid; it still holds up
"Was excited when I discovered VS had done a release of this film. I really enjoyed watching it as a kid. Had not watched it since. As soon as I discovered VS had worked their “magic” on it, I decided I had to pick it up. I was not disappointed. Great packaging. The transfer is outstanding. Good special features. You should add this to your film collection."

Do Androids Really Yearn for Little league?
"Featuring awesome VSU packaging, D. A. R. Y. L is a surprisingly dark movie at points. Short Circuit it isn’t (hey, a VSU idea for you). Entertaining and a reminder of the good ol’ VHS days."
— Paul C. (4/5)
D. A. R. Y. L. or Durill?

Peak ’80s sci-fi adventure nostalgia 😁
"D. A. R. Y. L. is exactly the kind of ’80s movie that still works for me because it mixes family adventure with just enough darker sci-fi stuff underneath. Barret Oliver is great as Daryl, and the movie does a good job making you care about him before the whole government-experiment angle really kicks in. I also love how it shifts from this warm suburban family story into car chases, military cover-ups, and full-on escape-movie territory. It has that very specific ’80s balance where a movie can be kid-friendly and still feel a little dangerous. Michael McKean, Mary Beth Hurt, and Colleen Camp are all great in it too. The 4K is a huge upgrade. Vinegar Syndrome restored it from the original 35mm camera negative with HDR, and it looks clean and detailed without losing the film texture. The 55-minute making-of documentary and Simon Wincer commentary are exactly the kind of extras I want on a nostalgia title like this. And the VSU packaging is ridiculous in the best way — magnetic box, Robert Sammelin artwork, booklet, the whole deal. Pure ’80s comfort food with a killer collector edition. Easy 5/5 for me. 😁"
