Lumet’s fine film, just prior to going huge with Serpico, is quite an excellent character study taking place in an all-boys Catholic school. Beau Bridges returns as the new gym teacher, finding his old teachers involved in some tense power play — the affable and dedicated Robert Preston and the fearsome and steict Latin teacher (Mason) whose kids are acting strange. The cinematography is evocative, with lots of shadows and red lighting, and the acting is uniformly great. A great overlooked gem.

No killer doll here—just Sidney Lumet turning a boys’ boarding school into a pressure cooker of resentment, paranoia, and very adult cruelty. James Mason and Robert Preston are excellent, while Michael Small’s score keeps tightening the screws. The 2K restoration looks beautifully filmic, and the extras are genuinely substantial.

Another very good Sydney Lumet directed movie. Recommend this high quality edition.

Child’s Play caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting something quite so unsettling from Lumet, and there is a creeping nastiness to the film that I found really effective. James Mason and Robert Preston are terrific, particularly as the tension between them makes it increasingly difficult to know where the truth lies. What stayed with me most was the atmosphere inside the school. There is a sense that something is fundamentally wrong there, but Lumet never makes it easy to pin down. It is an unusual film, uncomfortable in all the right ways, and one I can see myself returning to.
