Sweet Sugar

Fantastic job by the VS team with this one, as always.

This is the kind of film where our ***-crazed heroine is involved in not one but two bubble bath scenes within the first 35 minutes (one consensual), and casually flirts with a wild puma while walking through the jungle.

Featuring the best "actors having cats tossed on them and pretending to be attacked" scene this since of Dario Argento's Inferno.

It’s lazy in its exposition, but the body of the narrative is better paced and eventful. Pam Grier was in the most famous flicks of this genre, but this one is pretty good.

More plot holes than you can drive a truck full of scantily clad, machete wielding women through, but enjoyable enough to not be a waste of time. I don't know if it is in spite of or because of the dirty jungle setting, but Phyllis Davis looks incredible in every scene, and may be the most beautiful person I have ever seen.

Sweet Sugar is exactly the sort of women-in-prison exploitation film I want it to be. It is sleazy, violent, ridiculous, and completely unapologetic about what it is, but there is also a lot of energy and humor running through it. Phyllis Davis is terrific as Sugar and gives the film far more personality than I was expecting. I particularly liked how defiant she remains no matter what gets thrown at her. It is trashy cinema, absolutely, but really enjoyable trashy cinema, and I had a great time with it. Another VS release that reminds me why I have such a soft spot for this stuff.

Good restoration, Phyllis Davis looks stunning and the story is quite bonkers, but it wasn't much to my taste. Extra star for Phyllis appraring nude a couple of times.
