I love early queer cinema. I've also been having a wonderful exploration of the Canadian indie film scene of the 60s, 70s and 80s. So naturally, seeing the CIP release of Winter Kept Us Warm arrive in the store felt like something of an event.
Written and produced before Canada’s decriminalization of homosexuality, it's both a poignant glimpse of unrequited longing and a fearless work of autofiction. The then 22 year-old David Secter drew from a formative life experience to create a film that inspired many young filmmakers–David Cronenberg included–that many distributors wouldn't dare touch.
As usual, CIP delivers generously with their extras. There’s more than enough to watch and read afterwards. The slip design manages to be whimsical yet somber, like the film itself, reminiscent of the works of Al Columbia without the underlying sense of menace. Lastly, the stunning 4K restoration with its perfect amount of grain keeps the film’s retro charm.
Winter Kept Us warm left me with a similar feeling I get after an Andrew Haigh film: Mind gently blown, heart softly broken. Thank you, CIP.

A heartwarming feel good poetic film. Beautiful cinematography. Supposedly this film inspired David Cronenberg to pursue filmmaking . Release is loaded with special features and essays.
