Top Knot Detective

Top Knot Detective is a very funny little cult-object fakeout, playing like a lost Japanese TV phenomenon filtered through Australian late-night nostalgia and mockumentary obsession. The whole Ronin Suiri Tantai myth is ridiculous in the right way, with Takashi Takamoto’s ego, backstage rivalries, robot ninjas, monster weirdness, and blurred truth-versus-fiction storytelling all feeding the joke. What makes it work is that it clearly loves the kind of badly dubbed imported TV oddities it is parodying, rather than just sneering at them. The presentation suits the concept nicely too, with the sound, faux-history texture, and absurd behind-the-scenes details making it feel like a real cult artifact that somehow slipped through time. A fun, strange, very rewatchable oddity for anyone who enjoys affectionate genre parody.

Overall I enjoyed the film and moments where I literally laughed out loud. I did find the movie a bit repetitive and felt like it overstated its welcome but all in all it was a worthwhile addition to my collection.

Really liked the look of this title, lots of humour

This was so well done, had a great time. This is the kind of thing you hope to find when you blind buy random stuff.

Such a bizarre film,,, Loved every minute of it . Once again a great release from Vinegar. .
