Kore-eda steps outside his usual territory with a chilly courtroom procedural. Koji Yakusho and Masaharu Fukuyama are excellent, their uneasy exchanges driving a mystery where truth is constantly reshaped to suit competing narratives. A shift toward Fincher-esque unease gives the film an intriguing edge, but its increasingly tangled puzzle eventually threatens to overwhelm it. Fascinating in its ambitions, if a little overextended.

A very different movie for Kore-eda, but it works thanks to that fantastic central performance from Koji Yakusho.
