Experimental horror
The Runner (2022), directed by Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller (the duo behind Boy Harsher), is an experimental horror-music hybrid that plays more like a surreal extended music video than a traditional film. The Runner is best understood as a visual companion to Boy Harsher’s music rather than a standalone horror film. It’s stylish, unsettling, and musically immersive, but its fragmented narrative may leave casual viewers cold. For fans of darkwave, experimental cinema, or Lynchian atmospherics, it’s a fascinating cult artifact.
