The Incredible Melting Man is pure drive-in horror nonsense and I mean that lovingly. The plot is basically just an astronaut coming back from space, slowly turning into a dripping pile of goo, and then wandering around killing people while pieces of him keep falling off 😂
Rick Baker’s makeup effects are the whole reason to watch this. The melting face, exposed flesh, slime, and decay still look nasty as ****, and the practical work gives the movie way more personality than the story probably deserves. It has that perfect late-’70s “gross people out first, explain later” energy.
The 4K is a huge upgrade too. Vinegar Syndrome restored it from the original 35mm camera negative with HDR, and the extra detail really lets you appreciate all that disgusting makeup work. The commentary, William Sachs interview, Rick Baker material, Greg Cannom interview, and other extras make this a much stronger package than I expected.
Dumb? Absolutely. Gross? Very. Fun? Yep. This is exactly the kind of cult movie that physical media was made for. 😁

The Incredible Melting Man is ridiculous, gross, and a lot of fun. The real reason to watch it is obviously the melting man himself, and the effects are still wonderfully disgusting. There is something I love about a film that takes such a simple idea and then just keeps finding new ways for its main character to fall apart. The story around it is pretty thin and the whole thing has an odd tone, but none of that bothered me much. I came for a man slowly dissolving into goo and the film certainly delivers. Exactly the sort of 70s horror oddity that feels completely at home in the VS catalog.

Had to upgrade my blu-ray to this 4k version. Technically bad but I loved the effects in it and really what more can you expect from a movie called 'The Incredible Melting Man'. Recommended.

The effects work really shines in this astounding 4K restoration. I love how Vinegar Syndrome chooses movies that no other company would give the 4K treatment to in a million years.

Excellent goopy effects from Rick Baker highlight an essential drive-in staple. The movie looks fantastic. It's exactly the type of flick that I love from Vinegar Syndrome.
