Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

On an unforgiving, snow-swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. Only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant) stands between the innocent refugees and the corrupt bounty hunters. But, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong are not always clear, and good does not always triumph. Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from maestro Ennio Morricone, director Sergio Corbucci’s bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral, honorless West is widely considered to be among the best and most influential Westerns ever made.

Peak Western

"Huge surprise when I saw this title pop up! The Great Silence is legit one of the best westerns I've ever seen so this was a day one cop and luckily I was fast enough to grab the limited edition. The presentation is just superb and packed with extras. Even if the limited set is long gone, order the standard ASAP and experience this masterpiece!"

Great transfer, great picture

"Glad I snagged this one when I got the chance. Loved seeing this film the way it's supposed to. Wonderful transfer, one of the best westerns out there!"

James B. (5/5)

Incredible Western

"The Great Silence is a stark, snowbound western that flips the genre’s usual heroics into something far more bleak and haunting. Sergio Corbucci crafts a brutal, unforgiving world, while Jean-Louis Trintignant delivers a compelling, silent performance that says more than words ever could. It’s a cold, unforgettable film that lingers for its mood as much as its shocking, uncompromising ending."

Shawn M. (5/5)

Best of Corbucci

"This is definitely one of Sergio Corbucci’s best films and one of the finest spaghetti westerns ever. I’m so glad I was able to grab the limited edition of this beloved classic. As a spaghetti western fan, I can say almost everything works with it perfectly. It has memorable characters, great score and a moody atmosphere. I recently watched the previous blu-ray so I have not yet opened this 4K box set from the shrinkwrap. I am eager to see how ir looks on 4K."

Oskari V. (5/5)

Il Grande Silencio

"Spaghetti Western at its finest. Great movie. Kinski is so damn good (in the film!) The score is amazing. Glad to have picked this one up."

Edward G. (4/5)

Terrific Flick!

"I follow VS monthly and saw this excellent movie from their collection and decided to buy it! It kept my interest throughout the movie and was very enjoyable! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

Paul K. (5/5)

A core spaghetti western

"The Great Silence is one of the bleakest, most beautiful, and most subversive spaghetti westerns ever made—a film that turns the genre’s moral codes upside down while delivering unforgettable atmosphere and performances. This is Corbucci’s masterpiece: a tragic, politically charged western that rejects heroism, embraces moral ambiguity, and leaves a lasting emotional scar. It’s beautiful, brutal, and essential for anyone interested in the evolution of the western genre."

Tarek E. (4/5)

The Great Silence

"Truly amazing that we can get some of these hard to find classics in 4K. I remember the first time I watched it, it was so-so. But it has grown on me since. Definitely a different type of western than we're used to."

Andres P. (4/5)

Corbucci's masterpiece

"A classic spaghetti western with fantastic score and beautiful cinematography. Klaus Kinski is perfect as the brutal and unforgiving Loco."

Patrick D. (5/5)

One of the GREAT Spaghetti Westerns

"While there is no doubt that Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy is the absolutel pinacle of Spaghetti Westers, The Great Silence gets my vote for an entry on the Mount Rushmore of films from this movement. The snowy landscapes, excellent performances and expert direction by Sergio Corbucci make this essential viewing. The film itself comes with a few commentaries, a documentary and an alternate ending. This is an essential part of any collection."
