This special limited edition deluxe magnet box + slipcover set (designed by JJ Harrison), includes a 40-page perfect bound book and is limited to 8,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Nestled in the mountains of Tibet, an oracle known as “The Golden Child” has been born. Although guarded by the monks who raised him, villainous Sardo Numspa is determined to use the child’s mystical powers for evil purposes and hires bandits to kidnap him. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, crafty self-styled detective Chandler Jarrell is approached by Kee Nang, a young woman the monks have sent to aid in their quest to recover the child. Informing Chandler that he is the “chosen one,” the duo embark on an increasingly strange and dangerous adventure into the supernatural underworld, facing strange creatures, magical charms, and the threat of death around every corner as Sardo does everything in his power to prevent them from uncovering where he has hidden the child.

Effortlessly merging the insanity of an 80s exploitation film with the spectacle of a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, director Michael Ritchie’s (Prime Cut, The Bad News Bears) THE GOLDEN CHILD stars groundbreaking comedian and actor Eddie Murphy (48 Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop) in one of his wildest performances along with Charles Dance (Last Action Hero), Charlotte Lewis (Men of War, Pirates), and cult film superstar James Hong (The Vineyard, Big Trouble in Little China). Offering incredible production design and memorable stop motion effects, as well as plenty of weird and unexpected touches of sleaze, THE GOLDEN CHILD makes its 4K UHD debut from Vinegar Syndrome Ultra, restored in 4K from its camera negative and presented with a heaping host of interviews and extras, both new and archival.

Golden purchase

"Picture quality is out done, even by Vinegar Syndrome's high standards. The cover art is absolutely beautiful along with the newly commissioned pieces. Slipcase and box look amazing as well. Great item with hours of special features."

The Golden Era

"What a time for blockbusters it was. Another great movie from a amazing era of cinema. Some advice about this release: keep the original disc, because the "fixed" disc would not work for me; and also pick up the protective sleeve to keep this awesome box set in pristine condition."

Tyler H. (5/5)

Stay gold

"I somehow never saw this until now. It's great, peak Eddie Murphy. This movie is nuts, a lot going on. VSU packaging looks great but i don't think the original art does this movie justice."

John M. (5/5)

Just missed the mark

"Felt like they didn't know what type of film to make - a serious detective film or an Eddie Murphy comedy or a fantasy film - so they threw it all in a pot and mixed it up. The result is a bit of a mess and the end felt rushed. Victor Wong steals the show with his insults at Murphy"

KEVIN S. (4/5)

An enjoyable and amusing fantasy, well worth watching

"I bought this movie with my laserdisc player way back when, and I still love watching it today! Very funny movie. Eddie Murphy peaks during his 80's movies here. While his character is indistinguishable from earlier movies, his timing is almost flawless with perfect partners and foils. Couple this with the hypnotic beauty of Charlotte Lewis, this makes for a fun rainy day action-comedy flick."

The Golden Child - VSU

"Fantastic choice for VSU, absolutely LOVE this movie and was so excited for this release. Amazing front and rear cover art too!"

Dennis T. (5/5)

Def revist this gem

"How did I not remember that this film is completely bonkers with some truly wild psychedelic visuals? Honestly deserves to be a classic in the Eddie Murphy filmography. But of course, when you have films like BHC that made such a huge cultural impact, I understand why the ones that didn't aren't remembered as fondly. But def deserves a reconsideration if you haven't seen it in years."

Brian M. (5/5)

Eddie Murphy's wise-cracking dip into 80s genre cinema

"I'm sure after films like Trading Places, 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop this is not the Eddie Murphy movie that his fans wanted to see but I was 14 years old and this was exactly the kind of Eddie Murphy movie I wanted to see. The success of The Golden Child relies on one very important thing: you have to really think Eddie is funny because there is not a line of dialogue that he delivers that is not a wisecrack. In fact, everyone and everything else is taken seriously for the most part except for Eddie, who is not taking anything seriously at all. And, while this can be a disaster for most other movies, it just somehow works here. I don't know man, 80s vibes are going a long way here. Also, the Sardo stuff at the end is super rad. Nice looking transfer, comes with a slipcase AND a sturdy box and booklet. Haven't dived into the extras yet but they are plentiful. I mean, I'm pretty sure if you're going to pay the price for this one you probably love it like I do."

Golden Child on 4k!

"One of the most underrated Eddie Murphy movies. I was happy to see this movie again as I had not seen it in years. Great quality and love the packaging."

Classic!

"I know for some this was a controversial mainstream movie for VS to release, but I was happy to see it. Classic Eddie Murphy with special effects and one liners but now with a VS touch. Movie looked and sounded great! Nice sturdy thick box. No cast special features but interesting special FX folks and writer features."
