Incredibly bizarre and tonally confounding, THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS (1987) is definitely not a "good" film, but it's not nearly as bad as its reputation suggests (and it has a surprising amount of heart). It's mostly a stupid movie, but it's entertaining (to me). The jokes are (naturally) disgusting (and repetitive), but just the fact that this picture exists is...something.

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie is one of those movies I can’t even pretend is normal. The costumes are creepy as ****, the humor is gross, the whole thing feels like a live-action children’s movie from some alternate dimension, and somehow that’s exactly why I enjoy it.
There’s so much weird ’80s energy packed into this thing. Mackenzie Astin plays everything completely straight while these bizarre little Garbage Pail Kids burp, ****, fight, sing, and generally make everyone around them miserable. It’s ugly, goofy, strangely charming, and completely impossible to forget.
The 4K restoration is the real reason I love having this release. The colors and practical costumes look better than I ever expected this movie to look, while still keeping that proper film texture. Seeing something this infamous get a full boutique treatment is exactly the kind of physical-media nonsense I live for.
Is it a masterpiece? Absolutely not 😂 Is it a gloriously weird piece of ’80s nostalgia that I’m happy to own in 4K? 100%. Easy 5/5 for me.
