The Doll is a strange, sad little Swedish film that I found myself really drawn to. The idea of a lonely man becoming attached to a mannequin could easily have been played for laughs or turned into something much more lurid, but instead there is something genuinely melancholy about it. It is awkward and uncomfortable in places, but also surprisingly tender, and I liked how seriously it takes its central character and his loneliness. Definitely an unusual one, and exactly the kind of film I probably would never have discovered without the VS partner label line.

Another fantastic, deep-cut restoration that perfectly highlights why the Klubb Super 8 label is super.

The Doll was a wonderful discovery and a fascinating early Bergman film that gets inside the head of its troubled protagonist. The transfer looks remarkably clean and detailed while still retaining a natural film-like appearance. This is a beautifully presented release of an overlooked and psychologically rich drama.
