The Curious Dr. Humpp

One of the most deliriously bizarre gems of Argentine exploitation cinema. Directed by Emilio Vieyra, this black-and-white ***-horror fever dream follows the sinister Dr. Humpp, who kidnaps couples and drains their “blood forces of ***” in his quest for eternal youth. With grotesque monsters, gothic horror, comic-book pulp, bizarre sexual imagery and even a talking brain in a jar, it is an utterly unique piece of late-’60s cult cinema.

The AGFA + Something Weird Blu-ray, distributed through Vinegar Syndrome, is an especially fantastic presentation. It features a new 2K restoration from a 35mm internegative, a commentary by filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case), and, most importantly, La Venganza del Sexo, Vieyra’s original Spanish-language cut, restored in 2K from a 35mm fine-grain print and presented with English subtitles. Add reversible artwork plus a selection of wonderfully bizarre shorts and trailers from Dr. Humpp’s laboratory, and this becomes a superb package for anyone fascinated by the strangest corners of exploitation cinema.

60s pulp genre salad of the highest order

Not a great film, but weird enough to hold my attention.

Good and strange movie.
