Ghosted and Grounded

"The Civil Dead is a lo-fi comedy with a spectral twist, blending deadpan humor and existential dread into a quietly unsettling buddy film. Clay Tatum plays a down-on-his-luck photographer who discovers his old friend Whit is. . . dead. Or maybe not. The film never rushes to explain, instead letting the awkwardness simmer as the two navigate a friendship that’s equal parts needy, manipulative, and absurd. Shot with indie minimalism and dry wit, it’s a slow burn that rewards patience. Beneath the laughs lies a sharp critique of loneliness and the parasitic nature of certain relationships. Think Beetlejuice meets Frances Ha, but stripped of gloss and played for squirmy chuckles. A ghost story where the real haunting is emotional codependency."

Clay and Whitmer are a Tim and Eric of today

"Hilarious movie by the good fella of Power Violence. Get on this one"

Disturbingly Relatable

"Interesting little film-after watching it, I spent quite a bit of time wondering how I would've handled this situation. This film is bleak, funny, thought provoking, and triggers a surprising amount of introspection. If you enjoy movies where moral principles (by societal standards) and character motivations are not necessarily intertwined (such as "A Ghost Waits"), give this movie a shot. The practical thing to do is not always the moral thing, but we almost always do what's practical. . ."

The Civil Dead

"I love this movie. Lucky enough to get to program this for a film festival a couple years ago and moderate a q&a Wit, Such a perfect indie comedy. Keeps you guessing, has some incredibly funny lines, and the ending really leaves you saying, "jesus. . . they really did that. " Big fan."

Review title

"I saw the trailer for this somewhere and then bought the movie much later. Funny as heck. 5/5, no notes. Ending commentary characters. The trifecta for avant garde cinema."

Nicholas H. (5/5)

Awesome movie about loneliness

"A blind buy, lured in by the title and so glad I bought it. Awesome movie, well shot and acted. Lot´s of humor. How would one react if an old aquintance showed up and told you he was dead and only you could see him? Very Highly Recommended"

A Funny Modern Buddy-Comedy Ghost Film!

"A somewhat rambling hipster buddy-comedy which I am fully on board for. While it exudes existential dread from our ghost friend who's seemingly tied forever to his living friend, it's also a fun to see this contrasted against one of the most mundane lazy dudes going. A fella who half-heartedly tries to distance himself but still reaping the benefits of having an ghost friend. As expected for a modern film, it looks quite nice and has a highly stylized sort of desaturated and filtered colour sort of appeal to it. Enjoyed this a lot!"

Fab

"While this release is a little barebones, the movie itself is so charming. If you get on board with its deadpan humor, you’ll really dig it."
