1 star deduction because I found the movie depressing; if that doesn't bother you or even appeals to you, it's a 5-star release. Gorgeous transfer; I'm pretty sure I saw it on VHS back in the '90s and it certainly didn't look anywhere near as pristine as this. The cinematography has that polished '90s look to it, whereas my personal preference is the more gritty '70s 'realistic' look. Despite the quibbles, this is a solid release and I can understand why many consider it an essential acquisition for the Asian film fan. Nice booklet, too.

Zhang Yimou's 1995 gangster film is one of his most underrated, and Film Movement via OCN finally gives it a proper North American home video edition. The film's whole identity is built around production design and color, and this transfer makes that case better than any previous release. Gong Li is extraordinary in it. The Tony Stella slipcover art is also one of the better ones this label has commissioned.

Zhang Yimou's Shanghai Triad is a visually sumptuous gangster film that approaches the criminal underworld from an unusual perspective, following a young servant assigned to a powerful crime boss's mistress. Gong Li is magnetic, gradually revealing vulnerability beneath the glamorous and temperamental surface of her character.
The transfer is the centerpiece of this release. The rich colors, elaborate production design, nighttime interiors, and beautiful cinematography look superb, making the film's carefully controlled visual compositions even more impressive.
The sound presentation also deserves attention. Music, dialogue, and environmental details are handled cleanly, helping create the contrast between the decadent Shanghai nightlife and the quieter sections later in the story.
As an upgrade, this presentation is especially worthwhile because so much of the film's impact comes from how it looks and sounds. A strong restoration allows the craftsmanship behind Zhang's images to finally receive the home-video presentation it deserves.
Overall, Shanghai Triad is a beautiful, melancholy crime drama with outstanding performances and extraordinary visual storytelling.
