Welcome to the 1980s TV horrorshow that never was. PHANTASMATAPES is a psychotronic VHS mixtape that reimagines THE REVENGE OF DR. X (a Japan-set creature feature that was written by Ed Wood) and THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (the savage body horror film that inspired FRANKENHOOKER) as a late-nite, home-taped double feature—complete with local TV commercials and a new synthesizer score from Taken by Savages (JUNGLE TRAP). Inspired by hazy memories of channel-surfing at the witching hour, this is a nostalgic and experimental art project from the minds behind Bleeding Skull.

"PHANTASMATAPES is a lo‑fi collage of analog hauntings, VHS distortion, and dream‑logic dread. Bleeding Skull’s Blu‑ray preserves the tape‑rot aesthetic, adds thoughtful extras, and elevates this eerie SOV oddity without sanding off its weirdness. INCLUDES: Region Free Blu-ray PHANTASMATAPES: A 72-minute VHS mixtape Commentary by Bleeding Skull's Annie Choi and Joseph A. Ziemba THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (1962, 82 mins): Uncut VHS preservation THE REVENGE OF DR. X (1970, 94 mins): Uncut VHS preservation Short: THE MAX HEADROOM PIRATE INCIDENTS (2025, 7 mins) Short: A GHOST (2025, 2 mins) Short: I WANT MY D&D (2025, 8 mins) English SDH subtitles"
"Creature double feature of Revenge of Dr. X and The Brain The Wouldn't Die get the Team Bleeding Skull treatment, re-edited and re-scored complete with regional commercials like a haunted late night broadcast. Really enjoyed the format of this and I hope they do more."
"an incredibly unique, experimental art project that brilliantly captures the haze of late-night 1980s channel surfing."
"This Blu Ray includes 2 somewhat obscure movies: The Revenge of Dr X and The Brain the Wouldn't Die. Both films are pretty lousy quality presentations (VHS rips), The real draw here is the mash-up option in which the 2 movies are re-edited by the folks at Bleeding Skull. You get a new synth soundtrack, as well as some fun nostalgic commercials etc'. Overall, this is an interesting novelty, but nothing to really write home about. It would be great if we could one day get a decent version of The Revenge of Dr X, but that's extremely unlikely. Oh well! This might be the best we ever get."
"Cool experiment and idea. Fun to watch."
"Some really wonderful and odd films from Bleeding Skull."
"This strange release is just the kind of thing I want to see more of. You get a trippy late-night mash of old horror films with an updated synth score and psychedelic lighting that gives this an otherworldly feel that's appropriate for late-night viewing. Honestly, I can't remember the double-bill feature very much, but I very much loved it and the interruptions from TV commercials. This is the kind of release that I would love Bleeding Skull to do again with a new set of long-forgotten films. This is especially worth your time if you're a fan of the WNUF Halloween Special."
"A super fun mashup of schlocky horror that I could definitely see myself throwing on during future Halloween nights. For fans of B movie experimental goodness."
"As always w/ these Bleeding Skull and AGFA mixtapes, well worth the purchase."
