Description

A big city student arrives at a farm and falls in love with the farmer's 17-year-old daughter. They have to deal with disapproving parents, as well as the local priest, who thinks the youth of today is rotten.

This 1951 film unknowingly helped establish the reputation of Sweden as the land of sin, just because of a short, innocent skinny dip, fanning the image of Sweden as a sexually permissive country, and eventually spawning a wave of “Swedish Sin” films exported all over the world. The film remains to this day one of Sweden’s biggest international box office successes of all time. It was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and won the award for Best Music at the Cannes Film Festival.

Newly restored in 4K by the Swedish Film Institute.

    A fairly tepid Swedish melodrama

A conventional tragic summer romance, with youthful desire running headfirst into rural religious morality, and the film occasionally finds something genuinely moving in that conflict. But it’s also pretty slow and uneven, with the controversy surrounding its frank nudity arguably more memorable than the movie itself. The infamous skinny-dipping scene arrives late and leads into some remarkably bold nudity for 1951, though Göran Strindberg’s gorgeous photography is arguably the real revelation. Beautifully shot, historically fascinating, but mostly a rather ordinary melodrama.
