          Essential 2000s Artifact

          "Is it De Palma's best? No. Never will be by any metric. But it is a fascinating combination of his "Greetings"/"HI, Mom!" era puckishness (at least in this film's defiant to status quo spirit) and his utter disdain for war (Casualities of War). I have yet to take advantage of the commentary and features, but this is one De Palma flick that would benefit from context and insight. The films of the Bush II era–Obama/Trump I Middle East wars are an underexamined chapter in American cinematic history. The fact that De Palma made a definitive Vietnam film and this film makes for a potentially enlightening slice of American history."

          Underseen De Palma film

          "I've long been a Brian De Palma fan. He's underrated and too often dismissed as a Hitchcock imitator. Nothing Hitchcock like here. This is essentially a found footage movie discussing a horrifying event that I somehow had not heard about. It's pretty telling that something this awful could fade away from public memory so quickly. Touches on issues of violence and depiction of violence. Filming horrible things shown as both cynical self promotion and the only way to actually change things. Well made and interesting on low budget."

          Uncomfortably Relevant

          "De Palma goes back to his early, experimental roots in what has been unfairly called a loose remake of his earlier film Casualties of War. Unfortunately war is a cycle and this too is based on a real incident involving US soldiers raping and murdering a young girl. The film is essentially showing the tragedy played out via a montage of different media forms. The horrifying thing is this abundance of information only seems to heighten the sense of apathy. Another horrific tragedy lost in a sea of information."

          Messy, abrasive, occasionally ridiculous,

          "The film’s anger gives it a pulse most political cinema lacks. De Palma made something that practically begged audiences to reject it, which is probably why it still feels so alive. Really glad Magnolia and OCN brought it back to Blu-ray. This kind of angry, difficult studio-era experiment rarely gets revisited properly, and the new supplements make a strong case for Redacted as one of De Palma’s most confrontational and forward-looking films."
