My Sunshine is a beautifully understated Japanese coming-of-age film built around two young figure skaters and the coach who brings them together. The skating provides the framework, but the film is really about friendship, first feelings, disappointment, and those fleeting experiences that become important childhood memories.
The performances feel remarkably natural, particularly from the young leads. Director Hiroshi Okuyama keeps the storytelling restrained and allows glances, movement, and quiet moments to communicate emotions that the characters aren't yet able to articulate.
The wintry cinematography is gorgeous without becoming overly showy. The skating sequences have a graceful intimacy that complements the gentle tone of the story.
Overall, My Sunshine is a tender, bittersweet film that captures childhood and growing up without forcing its emotions. It stayed with me long after it ended.
