Mr. K

This surreal film seems to pull visuals from the set designs of the Junet et Caro book, and they work well. There is a wonderful maddening marching band and some other neat musical choices and the cinematography is excellent and helps to complete the paranoia. Crispin does well here, and the overall acting is fine. I'm stoked to have been able to pick up on of the sweet slipcovers, too!

great film and slip

This one was an easy blind buy because I'm a sucker for (1) contained films, particularly in hotels (2) surreal films and (3) films with Crispin Glover. Glover does a phenomenal job in this, a real pleasure to watch. The set design and use of extras and direction was all so refreshing and interesting. Some truly original shots in this.

Mr. K is a strange, dreamlike film that follows a traveling magician who checks into a mysterious hotel and discovers that leaving is much harder than entering. The increasingly impossible architecture and eccentric residents create a wonderfully surreal atmosphere that feels somewhere between Kafka and a dark fairy tale.

The visuals are the biggest attraction. Elaborate sets, unusual compositions, and the constantly shifting hotel give the film a distinctive handcrafted quality. Crispin Glover's central performance fits that world perfectly, balancing confusion, frustration, and vulnerability as Mr. K gradually loses his sense of control.

The supporting performances add to the oddness without overwhelming the story. Beneath all the absurdity, there's also an interesting exploration of self, belonging, and what happens when someone becomes trapped by the desire to understand a world that refuses to make sense.

Overall, Mr. K is an imaginative and visually memorable film that should appeal to viewers who enjoy surreal, unconventional storytelling.

A flight of fancy that feels like an eastern block Roald Dahl read some Lovecraft, and Crispin Glover's stuck in the middle of it all while needing a nap. The production design is precise and beautiful, but the storytelling isn't quite as honed. It frequently gets stuck in one fascination or another out of proportion of the story as a whole and leaving the film feeling as though it needed a few more passes at the writing level to make a more seamless experience.
