Last Embrace is one of those movies that hooked me more with the mood than the plot. Roy Scheider is great here because he feels completely frayed and paranoid almost from the start, and that nervous energy carries the whole movie. Jonathan Demme really leans into the Hitchcock influence too, but it still has that grimy late-’70s personality I love.
The locations and photography are a huge part of why it works for me. Everything feels cold, slightly off, and increasingly dangerous, and the movie keeps you guessing about what’s actually happening and what might just be in Scheider’s head. The cast is strong across the board, and the whole thing has this weird romantic-thriller vibe that feels very specific to the era.
The 4K transfer looks excellent too. Nice detail, strong film texture, and the darker scenes still have plenty of depth without looking scrubbed or overly modern. This is exactly the kind of older thriller I like seeing get a proper restoration.
Not one of Demme’s flashiest movies, but definitely one that gets under your skin. Very happy to have this one in the collection. 😁
