Released in 1990, Ju Dou holds the distinction of being the first Chinese film to have been nominated for an academy award, which generated controversy within the Chinese government at the time. This movie captures a muted, slow burn tragedy on a rural dye mill in the early 20th century, and is an early showcase of both Zhang Yimou and Gong Li's talents and chemistry as director and actor. The transfer is organic and crisp, with the earthy grime of the dye mill set practically coming through the screen. Absolutely recommended for anyone who can enjoy a movie that slowly envelopes the audience in both feeling and atmosphere.

This is a classic . One of the most beautiful Chinese films, looks brilliant on this blu-ray. Hopefully a 4K is in the works but if not this is still an excellent release. Give it a buy.
