Ghostkeeper

Ghostkeeper is exactly the kind of slow-burn horror I like when the setting is doing half the work. The snowy Canadian wilderness, the isolated hotel, the empty hallways, and that constant feeling that something is wrong give the movie a ton of atmosphere before it really starts showing its hand.

I like that it takes its time too. The movie feels cold, lonely, and increasingly uncomfortable, and once the group realizes they’re not alone, the whole lodge starts feeling like a trap. Paul Zaza’s score adds a lot to that mood without overpowering it.

The new Blu-ray is a huge upgrade. Canadian International Pictures restored it in 4K from the only known complete 35mm theatrical print, and the release is loaded with new commentaries and archival material. The limited Tony Stella slipcover was also capped at 2,000 copies, so I’m glad I grabbed that version.

Chilly, eerie, and full of that old-school Canuxploitation personality. Easy 5/5 for me. 😁

I love the snowy setting, but the story feels like a waste. Apparently they ran out of money which is a shame because the setting feels like an Until Dawn prototype.

A slow-burn Canadian horror that leans on isolation and creeping dread in a snowy setting, creating an eerie atmosphere even if its pacing and minimal action can feel a bit thin.

Great Canadian movie. Happy to have to my collection. Slip over is also incredible.

Ghostkeeper is a really effective little Canadian horror film that gets a lot out of its snowy, isolated setting. I liked the slow pace and the feeling of being completely cut off from everything, with the empty hotel becoming increasingly strange and uncomfortable as the film goes on. It is rough around the edges and leaves plenty unexplained, but I think that actually adds to its appeal. There is a lonely, slightly dreamlike quality to it that stayed with me afterwards. Exactly the kind of obscure Canadian genre film I enjoy discovering through CIP.
