Jan Svankmajer’s Faust is a rendering of the infamous Dr. Faustus fable of temptation and damnation. Borrowing freely from both Marlowe and Goethe and ancient folktales and timeless myths, the story follows a lonely Czech businessman who sells his soul to the devil in return for 24 years of self-indulgence. A visually fantastic combination of live-action, claymation, puppet theatre, stop-motion animation, and other special effects, Svankmajer creates an unsettling universe presided over by diabolic life-size marionettes and haunted by sinister human messengers from hell.

Surreal Take on a Classic Tale

"Thus film was a unique look at the problems that can were associated with Czechoslovakia's move from Communism to Capitalism. It also illustrated how the paths of our lives are not always up to us, and that we really have no control over the direction life takes us. Jan Svankmajer puts his own unique twist on the story of Faust by using live action, puppetry and stop motion to create a surreal world where an ordinary man is thrust into the spotlight and makes bad decisions that ultimately end up with tragic consequences. Very well done with aome bizarre imagery, and it really is very thought-provoking."

An exceptional (if somewhat bare-bones) release of a true experimental classic

"Very happy to finally have a high-quality version of this amazing film, although I wish it had included some more extras, like the English dub (only the original Czech track and a commentary track are included) or the original Faust short that Svankmajer made with his wife. Hopefully, the success of this release will lead to more US blu-ray releases of Jan Svankmajer's incredible body of work."

Faust

"An amazing claymation movie that has to be seen to be believed. As soon as I saw this drop on the VS website I had to own it bc it hasn’t been released on bluray in the US before. It’s also an amazing horror and well worth a purchase. Packaging and presentation are great!"

Matt R. (5/5)

Master of Puppets

"Unique and atmospheric. A ton of nicely done practical animation including claymation as well as puppets and masks. The only other movie that's a little in the same vein is The Wizard of Speed and Time, but with less dialogue. A cool watch."

Be wary if you find

"Be wary if you find an egg in your bread. An incredible movie, that I'm overjoyed to finally have on blu-ray, thank you Kim Stim, thank you Vinegar Syndrome. A little dream came true! Hope that doesn't mean my soul is in peril. . ."

Unlike anything else

"“There’s so much here, I’ll just have to sit down and reflect. And what my poor brain can’t comprehend…may well be understood by my other end. ” Incredible."
