Dream Team

Wasn't ever sure what to make of this odd micro-budget movie before I saw it. But on a blind buy I took a chance, and ended up quite liking it. It's as if David Lynch directed some episodes of Silk Stalkings. I was glad to hear during the commentary the writer/directors specifically mention Silk Stalkings, so at least I was on the right track. The slipcover and booklet were both nice.

I normally trust Yellow Veil’s curation, but this one fell a little flat for me. I was on this wavelength for a portion of the run time and really liked those bits. Doctor Beef is a great character.

The extra interviews, especially with Schoenbrun, provide some good context for what I didn’t connect with though.

Vinegar Syndrome’s 2024 Blu ray release of Dream Team gives this energetic slice of adult era comedy a level of polish it has never enjoyed before. The movie’s look has always leaned into glossy lighting, bright interiors, and a slightly heightened color palette that matches its playful, anything goes tone. On Blu ray, those choices feel sharper and more deliberate. The transfer brings out texture in clothing, set design, and makeup that older, softer presentations tended to blur. The film’s warm hues and punchy highlights come through with a stability that makes the whole production feel more intentional.

The tribute included on the disc is short but sincere. It acknowledges the film’s place in its niche corner of underground cinema and highlights the personalities who shaped its mischievous charm. It is not a deep dive, but it adds context and affection, giving collectors a sense of the era and the people behind the camera.

The cover artwork is one of the release’s strongest touches. Vinegar Syndrome leans into bold colors, crisp character placement, and a design that feels like a modernized riff on vintage poster art. It captures the film’s cheeky spirit without turning it into parody. On the shelf, it stands out as a confident, collectible piece rather than a simple reissue.

I love movies that don't fit into a box/cannot easily be categorised, and that most definitely applies to 'Dream Team'. Plays like a season of erotic, late night, 90s television cut up, screwed with, and remixed into a dreamy, experimental 90-minute pseudo mystery thriller. Big fan.

Very strange film, in a good way of course! A lot of weird comedy-esque moments. I was never bored and was entertained!
