Unlike Billy Tang’s usual extreme, boundary-pushing Category III films (like Dr. Lamb), he dials back the shock value here in favor of moody lighting, island isolation, and stylized dread. Not bad at all!

Pretty fun HK horror flick from Cat III maestro Billy Tang with an attractive young cast of then up and coming actors which includes Jordan Chan. Quite a stylish film, if you asked me, with a nice transfer too.

Dial D for Demons caught me off guard because Billy Tang goes way more atmospheric here than I expected. Instead of leaning on the full-on Cat III sleaze and violence he’s known for, this one builds its horror around a secluded island, creepy visions, strange pager messages, and that constant feeling that something is very wrong with the house.
I liked that slower ghost-story approach. Jordan Chan and the rest of the cast sell the tension well, and the movie has that late-’90s/early-2000s Hong Kong supernatural vibe that I have a soft spot for. It’s not wall-to-wall scares, but the mood kept me in it.
The Blu-ray treatment is strong too. The 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative looks clean while still keeping a natural film texture, and the Terence Yin interview, Billy Tang video essay, commentary, and trailer give the disc some real substance.
Creepy, stylish, and a nice change of pace from Tang’s nastier stuff. Not his wildest movie, but definitely one I’m glad VSA dug up. 😁
