Delirium

Delirium was a fantastic Italian thriller. I definitely was not expecting the movie to be this good.

The extras are fantastic and the slipcover is truly gorgeous. Highly recommended flick!!

Delirium is exactly the kind of Italian genre insanity I’m here for. Mickey Hargitay plays this respected doctor who’s also completely unraveling, and the movie mixes murder, ***, sadomasochistic nightmares, police procedural stuff, and full-on gothic weirdness into something that feels increasingly unhinged the longer it goes.

Rita Calderoni is a huge part of why it works for me too. The whole movie has this sweaty, fever-dream quality where you’re never quite sure whether you’re watching a giallo, a psychological breakdown, or some bizarre erotic nightmare. That unpredictability is the fun.

Vinegar Syndrome’s release is stacked. The film was restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative, and you get the Italian track with new subtitles, a commentary, multiple Polselli/Hargitay featurettes, plus the shorter 86-minute American cut as an extra. The Robert Sammelin slipcover also fits the movie perfectly.

Sleazy, psychedelic, nasty, and completely committed to the madness. Easy 5/5 for me. 😁

Delirium is a strange one, even by the standards of Italian horror. It is sleazy, stylish, occasionally ridiculous, and filled with the kind of bizarre imagery that makes you wonder exactly what was going through the filmmakers' heads. I cannot say everything works, but I enjoyed how unpredictable it is and how happily it jumps between erotic thriller, murder mystery, and outright weirdness. Serena Grandi certainly makes an impression, and the film has enough visual flair to keep things interesting whenever the story starts to wander. Not a favorite, but definitely my kind of oddity, and another VS release I am glad to have discovered.

An insane giallo that does something a little different. A really fun time!
