This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Chris Barnes) is limited to 6,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

After a defiled corpse is discovered in an abandoned building, Inspector Zhang recognizes the scene as being similar to other mutilated bodies that have been turning up in the area. Realizing that there is a deranged serial killer at large, Zhang's investigation soon leads him to a local brothel run by the headstrong Madame Lan, which appears to be the killer’s hunting ground. While public suspicion soon falls on a recently released-from-prison necrophile, Zhang is unconvinced, believing that the killer and their motive are hiding in plain sight.

Directed by horror maestro Chih-Hung Kwei (Hex, The Boxer's Omen), CORPSE MANIA masterfully fuses Shaw Brothers’ well-regarded dramatic period pieces with the structure and style of the Italian giallo, offering foggy streets, gelled lighting, and grisly murders perpetrated by a black-clad killer. Moving from twist to twist and sure to leave viewers squirming in horror all the way to the end, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present this essential Hong Kong horror on UHD, newly restored in 4k from its original camera negative, packed with extras, and featuring all the maggot-covered corpses one could ask for.

Reviews

Disgusting and surprisingly atmospheric Chih-Hung Kuei

"I was not expecting the deep atmosphere that was found in this eerie period piece slasher from Shaw. Featuring the trademark disgusting practical effects that characterize most of Chih-Hung's later movies, I was not expecting the classic Shaw set to feel so transformed with mood, lighting and fog. The 4K transfer shines with organic, muted colors, contrasted by splashes of blood red. The ending wasn't quite for me (much like his other movies from this period) but the film experience itself is certainly worth it for fans of his work and the genre."

Maggot covered giallo

"Picked this up during the sale and I'm surprised I never gave it a try sooner. It's better than I expected but I am becoming a fan of the Shaw Bros releases I've been adding to my collection. So story is, this Madame Lan is pimping out and selling girls off at this brothel she runs and the girls are all turning up dead and everyone thinks the recently released necrophiliac is responsible but of course the ending has a plot twist!"

Jason R. (5/5)

Necro Shaw

"Not the total goop onslaught that he's mostly known for, but this is still some nasty work from Kuei Chih-hung. The central theme is necrophilia, for God's sake! Thankfully he spares us any, um, onscreen corpse relations, but you do get maggot covered corpses and lots and lots blood. Giallo-inspired, but with that early 80s envelope pushing that the Shaws were digging into. Fun! Really nice transfer. I'm glad we're finally getting, although verrrrry slowly, Shaws in UHD."

Corpse Mania

"Another wild one from Shaw Brothers Studios, Corpse Mania from 1981, a rare Asian foray into Italian giallo. Recommended only for viewers with strong stomachs! Nice transfer for this VS release with a beautiful slipcover. If you're interested in this movie, be sure to get it with the slipcover while you can!"

Hong Kong Giallo!

"Corpse Mania is excellent. The colours look great on the 4K. The movie is nuts. Lots of twists and it definitely keeps you interested. Really cool slipcover too!"

Nolan L. (5/5)

Corpse Mania

"This is a great HK horror that has tons of atmosphere. There’s some great action sequences and practical effects. Other standouts are the set and costume design. This VS release is fantastic, as usual. Nice slipcase and artwork, reversible sleeve, and a booklet. As far as I know this film is the only HK “Giallo”. I highly recommend the film and especially this release."

Griffin G. (5/5)

Good Flick

"The slipcover is awesome, as always with anything VS or their awesome partner Labels release! It is a cool movie that was a lot of fun to watch! I always love the unique VS service of allowing you to stack as many movies as you like in your cart during any release period and ship them for free! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

Stylish and Macabre Whodunit

"A stylish blend of mystery and horror. . . Such a grim mood piece for a detective film. Erica Shultz’s writing is always a treat for me, adding sharp insight to a film that deserves it. Looking forward to Samm Deighan's commentary. Wish I got the slipcover version."

Gregory B. (5/5)

Epic horror movie

"Beautifully shot movie with lots of violence and gore. Story was very well written and it’s looks amazing in 4k. The case itself is amazing and comes with a cool booklet. If you’re a fan of shaw brothers definitely need this in your collection."

Alberto S. (5/5)

Shaw brothers classic

"This release looks amazing and is a real find, a real upgrade from older releases. A Shaw brothers classic."
