A hugely enjoyable love letter to VHS-era action movies
"Commando Ninja is a wildly entertaining tribute to the golden age of 1980s action cinema. Ninjas, commandos, cyborgs, time travel, dinosaurs and excessive violence are thrown together with obvious affection for films like Commando, Rambo, Predator, The Terminator and American Ninja. The result is deliberately ridiculous, but also surprisingly ambitious and packed with creative ideas. Unlike New York Ninja, the fights feel much more energetic and imaginatively staged. The practical gore, explosive action, wonderfully cheesy dialogue and excellent retro soundtrack make the short running time fly by. The Blu-ray looks very good, although the intentionally added scratches and grindhouse processing mean it is not supposed to appear perfectly clean. Colors are bold, the synth-heavy audio has plenty of impact, and the extensive making-of documentary—which is almost as long as the film—is an outstanding addition. The disc is also region-free."
