Censor

I’m so glad VS has this available. The packaging looks so good, video and audio quality are great, and this movie is amazing imo. Can’t go wrong with a first-time director making something absolutely bonkers. Love the atmosphere as well.

A very interesting throwback horror film with meta commentary on Britain's infamous video nasties era and a look at how the loss of her sister has impacted the central character Enid.

It's fun to think and feel yourself into the position of someone who is tasked with or has chosen to censor the very films we love, even if I, personally, don't count myself among the full-on gore hound crowd myself.

Enid and her colleagues seem to both want to protect young children from getting their hands on certain films and having the ability to rewind and rewatch gruesome scenes, but they also see themselves as savior mediators between what the censorship rules demand and what the filmmakers are trying to give their audience.

This gets to be quite the head trip at times and I think I need to rewatch this at some point to fully wrap my head around it.

Censor is a solid horror film that could have been great. The film looks quite good and is quite entertaining, but I agree with many reviewers that the film is better when it is a psychological thriller following the mental unraveling of a government censor in the midst moral panic, exposed constantly to violent imagery and blamed by the press for every violent crime, then when the film later tries to become a giallo. What really pushes this release into the essential catagory is the wealth of special features, which should interest anyone curious about government censorship or '70s/'80s horror. These features include a feature-length documentary (directed by co-founder of Severin films David Gregory) about the Video Nasty panic and numerous other featurettes and commentaries examining both the film and the moral panic it discusses.

cute film

A kool movie from Vinegar Syndrome a course.
