Explosive action, bloody gunfights and bone-breaking martial arts all collide in this "girls with guns" double feature of BLACK CAT and BLACK CAT 2. Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to present this deadly duo for the first time on Blu-ray in the US, newly restored from archival film elements.

BLACK CAT (96 min): After brutally killing an abusive trucker at a rest stop, tough as nails drifter Catherine soon finds herself facing life in prison due to her violent outbursts. But, when a daring escape from the courthouse leaves her all but dead, Catherine awakens to find she's been given another lease on life, the only catch: she must train to become an assassin for the CIA under the codename Black Cat. With the tutelage of fellow agent, Brian (Simon Yam, Ip Man), Catherine must learn to give up any chance of a normal life if she wishes to remain alive. Known to many as "the Hong Kong version of La Femme Nikita," BLACK CAT manages to separate itself from its predecessor thanks in part to the intense martial arts sequences captured by director Stephen Shin (Easy Money), as well as a stellar performance from the lovely but deadly Jade Leung (Satin Steel, Enemy Shadow).

BLACK CAT 2 (91 min): After undergoing a series of medical experiments in order to become a more efficient assassin, Catherine struggles to maintain what little of her human side is left. Deemed compromised by her higher-ups, Catherine is given one more chance when she is partnered with a young hot-headed agent, Robin (Robin Shou, Mortal Kombat). Catherine must use her newly enhanced skills in order to stop a violent assassin before he claims his next victim. BLACK CAT 2 sees the reunion of director Stephen Shin with Jade Leung returning as the title character. However, this sequel manages to up the ante on the original by combining sci-fi elements with over-the-top action sequences, including an end fight scene that is sure to make your head spin.

Watch 1, skip 2

"Part 1 is a bonkers and fun movie - well worth a watch. Part 2 is the worst of HK 90s international action films - no heart, no plot, just international action set pieces. Really hard to see how it's even related to the first, except for the recap at the beginning, which is then kinda contradicted. But part 1 is definitely worth it. Cover makes it look like a sex film, which is why I avoided it, but actually it has minimal sex/nudity (and none in part 2)."

VSMC Rewards Strikes Again!

"As a more recent VS purchaser, I love the releases that come from the rewards. I'm glad I was able to score a copy of this one with my rewards and was surprised to see all the features that came with the movie. The still scenes on the VS site make the movie look like it's full of exciting sequences. Looking forward to checking this one out!"

Vinegar Syndrome’s Black Cat 1

"Vinegar Syndrome’s Black Cat 1 & 2 Blu-ray collection offers definitive 2K restorations of the Hong Kong "girls with guns" action cult classics, featuring high-quality audio options and insightful new interviews with star Jade Leung and martial arts director Benz Kong To-Hoi. The release includes both the gritty, stylish La Femme Nikita reimagining and the sci-fi-infused sequel, along with a 40-page book in a lauded VSA edition."

Black Cat 1&2

"This flick would qualify as the first remake of the 1990 French classic, before Hollywood and American television picked up the idea. The early scenes in this Hong Kong crime actioner are a little rough around the edges, causing me to fear a "Tokyo Shock"-style schlockfest. But I persevered and was rewarded. There is violence and action aplenty along with the melodramatic and romantic elements that we've come to love and expect in this kind of film. What really makes the flick stand out is Jade Leung's performance. She is feral and dangerous in the beginning, like a sort of creature. In the course of the film she metamorphoses into someone beautiful and sexy, while retaining her dangerous quality. The actress deserves credit for the way she pulls that off. Oh, and the closing credits music is a spare, crisp example of late-80s/early 90s urban setting film music. Well done!"

Why are we so obsessed with the slipcovers?!?

"Above-decent title with awesome 90's vibes Would have been nice to pick this one up with one of their super sweet slipcovers, but, alas, not this time! Still an entertaining release and one that comes "highly recommended" with or without the slip"
