Autoerotic

The Film: Autoerotic (2011) is an indie drama directed by Joe Swanberg and Adam Wingard. It explores modern relationships and intimacy through four different couples in Chicago.

Blind buy on my part. Never heard of Swanberg or the term mumblecore before and let’s just say his films probably aren’t for me. But, there is nudity.

Interesting Swanberg/Wingard production…how Adam Wingard wound up directing a Godzilla movie is crazy to me! Anyway, this one is better than Drinking Buddies, so there’s that.

This film is a loosely connected series of vignettes around pleasure can be quite entertaining. The commentary by the directors is quite good, as it is more of them reflecting on that time of their life, before they got much more financially successful.

Autoerotic is a short, provocative drama that examines the complexities of sexual identity, personal desire, and self-exploration. The film is minimalistic in both narrative and setting, focusing closely on the internal experiences of its protagonist.

The strength of the piece lies in its subtlety and honesty. Performances are understated, emphasizing vulnerability and authenticity over melodrama. Cinematography is intimate, using close framing and careful lighting to reflect the character’s emotional and psychological states.

For viewers interested in nuanced, character-focused explorations of sexuality and personal discovery, Autoerotic offers a compelling, thought-provoking experience.
