American Rapstar works best as a time capsule of that SoundCloud rap moment, when the scene felt half punk chaos and half internet fame machine. It is not the usual VS-style genre madness, but the behind-the-scenes footage and Justin Staple commentary make it an interesting partner-label pickup. I liked that it does not try to polish the culture too much. It feels messy, sad, funny and very tied to its specific moment.

The ear of those new rappers is gone, yes it was very a short period of time, some are now dead or broke.
