"As the mid-60s gave way to the fall of the production code, smaller productions took advantage of looser cultural mores and restrictions around censorship. Who Killed Teddy Bear, a Manhattan set proto-slasher, mashes up the expected excesses of sexploitation with the tried and true conventions of a storied police procedural, making ample use of actual city locations. In its uncut form, Joseph Cates’s masterpiece becomes an essential piece of the story of genre cinema in the US, predicting films like Cruising or Crimes of Passion decades before their release."
