Cyber Vengeance is the exact kind of low-budget sci-fi insanity I want from the VSA line. Virtual-reality prisons, rich guys paying to hunt inmates, Robert Davi chewing scenery, Matthias Hues showing up, and a concept that keeps jumping through different locations and time periods — this thing is swinging for the fences even when the budget clearly isn’t.
That’s honestly what made it fun for me. The effects and production design can be rough, but there’s so much imagination packed into it that I’d rather watch this than something technically polished with no personality. It has that perfect mid-’90s “cyberspace is the future!” energy that I have a soft spot for.
The Blu-ray transfer is surprisingly strong too. Vinegar Syndrome scanned the original 35mm camera negative in 4K, so underneath all the bargain-bin cyberpunk chaos there’s a genuinely nice-looking film presentation. The 22-minute making-of is a great extra because it makes you appreciate how much they pulled off with what they had.
Is it convincing futuristic technology? **** no 😂 Is it ambitious, goofy, and exactly the kind of forgotten video-store oddity I collect VSA for? Absolutely.
