The Cat Creeps

A real treat for fans of forgotten Universal horror! The Cat Creeps is one of those seldom-seen titles that deserves a lot more attention. Originally released theatrically as a double feature with She-Wolf of London, this overlooked gem was unfortunately left out of Scream Factory’s Universal Horrors Blu-ray collection. Thankfully, Vinegar Syndrome has given it a standalone home on Blu-ray, making it much easier for classic horror fans to finally add this elusive title to their collections. A welcome release and another reason to appreciate VS keeping these forgotten horror treasures alive!

I wanted this movie because it was the final one in Universal’s 2nd horror movie cycle. While the actual movie comes nowhere near to delivering on the promise of the original poster art for the movie (which is sensational), that’s not Vinegar Syndrome’s fault. But what they bring to the blu-ray in terms of quality of the restoration and the special features is terrific. There’s a great mini doc with Kim Newman that puts the movie in the larger context of classic-era horror movies as well as a terrific commentary track with two very knowledgeable film historians. All in all I’m delighted with this blu-ray.

A solid enough bit of old school Hollywood here with The Cat Creeps. In this day and age it would be TV special due to its length, but the director does a great job with what he had. Story beats run along perfect and the thrills and chills that this film has work well enough.

Is it an instant classic like other films made by Universal? Not really, but it was a fun watch and palate cleanser. The restoration makes the film pop and shows how good people had it when it came to setting the mood with camera work and a score.

Quite a fun little mystery film really good vibes and atmosphere.

A good very atmospheric black and white who done it a couple of fun interviews nice piece from the past
