My Tip: read no more reviews, just watch this cold (as I pretty much did). This is one very strange movie and there's no way to classify nor summarize it. It's definitely flawed (hence 4 stars), but jaw droppingly original. And a studio put this out! And if you've never seen Marcel Marceau in action, he's breathtaking here, as are his fellow mimes (though no one is playing a mime... as I said, just watch it... go on... stop reading this and get it)

I've been a fan of William Castle's classics like THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL or THE TINGLER. Somehow I never noticed his very last film SHANKS, although it was realesed on Blu-Ray by olive Films before. That release has been OOP for years though now and was completly bare bones.
Cinematographe to the rescue! Justin LaLiberty and his team produced this fantastic new UHD/Blu-Ray combo pack with a brand new 4K restoration, looking super clean, crisp and sharp. The BD is Region A locked by the way.
The movie is very different from Castle's early films I mentioned above. It's part, part drama, part comedy and quite surreal at times. Very unique in fact. Legendary French mime Marcel Marceau delivers a great performance. Tough guy character actor and Biker movie stalwart Larry Bishop ("The Savage Seven") appears as Napoleon. Alright :D
Extras include a very interesting video essay by critic Daniel Kremer, a very entertaining commentary by film historians Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw and an archival interview with Marceau.
The packaging is of very high quality and typcial for Cinematoghraphe - a Mediabook type thing in a sturdy sideloading slipcase. I love those things.
